The Urban dictionary defines Diva as: “To describe a person who exudes great style and personality with confidence and express their own style and not letting others influence who they are or want to be. A person whose character makes them stand out from the rest… A person who tries to achieve what they want and who do not let people get in their way and doing so with style and class.”
Deena fits this description down to a tee. Since she’s been a client of Turning Point, Deena has become very independent and is an extremely busy young woman, living her life to it’s fullest. Rewind to her goals in 2013, Deena wanted to be more independent, go flatting one day, and learn to catch the bus. She also wanted to fulfill a lifelong dream of singing.
Fast forward – she’s done SO MANY things. For over 5 years now, every Tuesday, Deena works voluntarily at Summerville Rest home, helping set up the morning tea and helping the diversional therapist to set up their games.
She is an active member of Special Olympics and has many, many, trophies, ribbons and medals (she could literally open up a viewing room as a tourist attraction!) She is an exemplary 10-pin bowler and swimmer. Deena also keeps fit by going to the gym and by walking everywhere – but if it’s too far she will catch the bus, no trouble.
Deena lives independently in a flat that is supported by Community Connections who just check up on how she is doing.
Deena started singing lessons in 2013, which she enjoys immensely, and is still participating in. If someone is leaving or having a birthday, Deena will happily burst into song to celebrate whatever the occasion. We held a fundraiser for one of our clients and Deena got right into it and was one of our catwalk models (see photo of Deena in the green dress).
Deena also loves to dance!!! AND she’s great at it! In the past she’s even learned line dancing. Last year she was a “background dancer” in our joint production (in collaboration with Idea Services) and she STOLE THE SHOW! Deena is a loyal and avid participant at the Annual DRC Halloween Discos.
